The hard part is over – actually asking them out, that is! Now that they’ve accepted and the date is set, it’s time to go over those all-important dinner date rules. Although the word ‘etiquette’ brings to mind genteel old ladies in Victorian-era attire, good manners never go out of style. As one of the best restaurants in Malta, the team at Sciacca Grill shares a few important rules of appropriate dinner behaviour.
1. Guys, Don’t Make the Order For Her
It’s the 21st century and believe it or not, she can make her own decisions. A lot of men seem to think that ordering for a woman shows chivalry or old-fashioned courtesy; however, it reeks of chauvinism. The lady will have the prawns? More like the lady will up and leave.
2. Be Polite to the Waitstaff
They say that the way someone treats servers reveals a lot about their personality – and nothing could be truer. If you’re polite to the waiters, it tells your date that you are a thoughtful and well-behaved individual who is used to treating others with respect.
3. Put Your Phone Away
Constantly texting or taking calls every half an hour is a sure-fire way to not getting a second date. Leave your phone on silent and only answer it if you think it’s an emergency (unless you want to show off some cute cat photos – there’s never a wrong time for cat photos).
4. Don’t Talk About Yourself All the Time
Unless you’re directly descended from the Romanovs, there’s no way you can be that interesting. Besides, the point of a date is to get to know one another better. Ask questions about their likes or dislikes, about their family and friends or what they do for a living. Just remember that it’s a date, not an interview!
5. Offer to Pay, but Don’t Insist On It
Again: it’s 2019, not 1919. Sure, many women out there do appreciate it when the man offers to pay, but others feel very strongly about paying their share – conventional dinner date rules be damned. It’s a delicate situation, but if she really does want to split the cheque, agree to go Dutch. Remember, there’s a thin line between being gentlemanly and being overly patriarchal.
